Jiu Jitsu and Sharing with CBS Austin
For many people Jiu Jitsu is a lot of things…Not only is it a HUGE part of the #1 fastest growing sport in the world, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). It is also a fun way to get started or end their day, a way of life, a great community of close friends, how they learned to save their life, etc
But sometimes veterans to the art of forget that most people have never heard of it!
-and that is why it was so awesome to see that Aces Jiu Jitsu Club got to share a bit about what Jiu Jitsu is, with CBS Austin’s award winning team at “We are Austin”!
Professor Mikal Abdullah - 2nd degree BJJ Black Belt and head coach - got to not only share a sweet Armbar technique but also, teach the show's host Trevor Scott how to do his first throw ever right here!
The Armbar
The armbar is a classic in the world of Jiu Jitsu and can be seen winning fights on the mats, in the cage for MMA, and on the streets for self defense! And Aces Jiu Jitsu Club was fortunate to be able to share a quick tour of its Pflugerville, Texas location with one of Aces coaches and champions, Luke Wear - right before teaching the armbar to all of the We Are Austin viewers. Check it out right here.
Here is another video on the Aces Jiu Jitsu Club YouTube channel of Professor Mikal teaching a similar armbar in case you wanted to see it from another perspective here.
The Hip Toss
The hip toss or hip throw as some call it, is a move with its origins in Judo that is used often in Jiu Jitsu to quickly and safely get our opponent to the ground! As you can see when Trevor learned it (here it is again), its fairly easy, but does require some attention to a few details and of course a bit of practice when going “live”.
But in practice Trevor was able to nail it on his first try after a quick explanation from Professor Mikal. And as you can see he got it on his first try!
-And apparently making We Are Austin history with it first throw performed for the city of Austin to see.
Making REAL and EFFECTIVE Jiu Jitsu accessible and fun is a huge part of sharing the love so getting to write this article is just another example of why Aces Jiu Jitsu Club “brings it” to each community where it opens locations.
We love sharing the beautiful art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and will make sure to keep this article updated as we get the opportunity to share with CBS Austin and the awesome “We Are Austin” audience!
